- Besides all the posting about unimplemented features
- and bugs in PageStream 3.0i here is one about some flaws
- in the user interface of PageStream 3.0i. I hope, Soft-Logik
- can correct them 'til 3.1.
-
- Labels:
- Labels have to be >left<-aligned! In PS 3.0 labels are
- right-aligned, so when you have several of them in a
- column, the eye has to "search" the beginning of each
- line. The Gestalt-law of closeness (label close to entry
- field) in this case is overruled by the habit to read
- from left to the right.
-
- >Mixed<:
- With PageStream 3.0i some of formatting-controls were
- changed to show ">mixed<" when several objects with
- different formats were chosen.
- The "Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines" (certainly
- a "standard" in GUI-Development) says that you should
- not use generic terms as "mixed" ('what does that mean?
- am I mixed up, or what?') in such cases.
- The former solution of leaving the field blank was better
- (but still not "perfect").
-
- Landscape:
- In PageStream 3.0i there is a checkbox in the page-definitions
- to indicate whether the page should be "landscape" or not.
- Question: What does my page look like, if the checkbox is
- not checked, so the page is >not< landscape? Will it be square?
- Circular? Triangular?
- We all >know< that the page will be "portrait", but we have to
- have this inherent knowledge to use this control. A better solution
- would be to implement this feature using two radio-buttons (so the
- options are always visible).
- A Checkbox shouldn't be used to chose between exclusive alternatives
- but to chose optional possibilities. The "contrary" of the checkbox-
- selection should always be clear.
- Example: The contrary of "dither pictures" is "don't dither pictures".
- The contrary of "always dither pictures" is not clear; maybe it is
- "never dither pictures" or "sometimes dither pictures"...
-
- I know, you have a lot of work to implement the promised functionality,
- but don't forget: for most users the user-interface IS the application!
-
